Could Your Food Be Giving You a Hangover?
Most of us know exactly what a hangover feels like. Too much alcohol, and the next
morning you wake up feeling dreadful, head pounding, body heavy, desperate for water and
a dark room. The cause and effect is obvious.
But what if your food was doing the same thing, and you just hadn't noticed?
The Connection We Often Miss
Food intolerances and dietary sensitivities are far more common than most people realise,
and far more subtle than food allergies. While an allergy tends to produce an immediate
reaction, an intolerance can quietly cause symptoms for hours or even days, making it
difficult to connect how you feel with what you ate.
Persistent headaches. Bloating. Unpredictable digestion. Aching joints. Low energy. That
heavy, foggy feeling that you've started to accept as your normal.
If any of those sound familiar, food could be playing a much bigger role in your daily
wellbeing than you think.
Becoming a Food Detective
The first step in any meaningful nutrition and health journey isn't a dramatic diet overhaul,
it’s curiosity. When I work with clients, I encourage them to become detectives. We look for
patterns between what they eat and how they feel. We track symptoms. We pay attention.
Then we make changes.
Sometimes that means removing foods that appear to be triggering problems. Sometimes it
means reducing sugar, improving food quality, or adjusting meal timings. The changes don't
have to be complicated, but they do need to be intentional.
Why the First Few Weeks Feel Hard
Changing your eating habits isn't always comfortable, especially at the start. That's why
having support matters. Knowing you can message someone between sessions, ask
questions, and get reassurance when you're wondering whether it's worth carrying on, that
makes the difference.
And it is worth carrying on.
Because what typically happens after a couple of weeks is that energy improves, bloating
settles, headaches reduce, and joints feel easier. People start to feel genuinely better.
Then they go out for a pizza or a few drinks, and the next day they tell me: "I feel worse
than ever. What have you done to me?"The truth? They don't feel worse than ever. They feel better than they have in years, and for
the first time, they've experienced the contrast. That awareness is everything.
Real Change Starts in Your Head
Sustainable healthy eating isn't just about nutrition. We're emotionally attached to food. It's
tied to celebrations, comfort, family traditions, and childhood memories. Understanding
those connections is just as important as understanding what's on your plate.
Sometimes healthy eating means making a different choice from everyone around you. But
instead of apologising for that, try this: invite your family along. Serve them what you're
having. You might be surprised.
